In Virginia, coasting is prohibited. Under § 46.2-811, a driver of a motor vehicle is forbidden from coasting down a hill with the gears of his vehicle in neutral.
This type of law is a typical example of one that was passed at a time when safety dominated other concerns -- environmental or economic concerns might now encourage folks to coast down hill. Additionally, this is an example of a law that is honest, but impractical. Enforcing this law and proving it in Court would be an uphill challenge for any Commonwealth Attorney.
